Historic Waxahachie, Inc. presented a check for $500.00 to Emily Mackel, the first recipient of the HWI Essay Scholarship at the WHS Senior Awards Night ceremony on Tuesday, May 14th.
HWI Board Member and Scholarship Committee Member, Kirk Davis, made the presentation. Emily was chosen from 11 other applicants based on her essay discussing the aspect of Waxahachie history she found most interesting. The HWI Scholarship Committee had a very difficult decision to make as all of the applicant essays were interesting and very well written. HWI is proud of all of the students who applied and proud that we are able to make this scholarship available to a deserving graduate.
Emily’s essay was on Getzendaner Park. She discussed the history of the Park, the prominent role it has played in our City’s history, as well what the park has meant to her personally over the years. Emily will be attending Dallas Baptist University in the Fall.
By providing this scholarship, HWI hopes that the students will remember that history is more than just reading a book and remembering dates and names. It is about personal stories and how they affect us. We also hope that these students will remember the rich history of Waxahachie that will always be an important part of their lives.
HWI would like to offer congratulations again to Emily and all the wonderful Class of 2019 WISD graduates!
