HWI 2020 Scholarship Winners

Congratulations to Claudia Mackel and Dylan Florence!

Historic Waxahachie, Inc. awarded 2 scholarships to 2 Waxahachie High School Seniors on May 11th. The recipient of the $1,000.00 scholarship is Claudia Mackel, who wrote an essay on the Interurban Rail system. Dylan Florence, who wrote an essay on the Ellis County Courthouse, is the $750.00 scholarship recipient.

All applicants were extremely qualified and wrote wonderful essays on what aspect of Waxahachie’s history was most important to them.  The Scholarship Committee had a difficult choice to make because all of the essays were interesting and very well written.

Both Claudia and Dylan plan to attend Texas A&M University in the Fall.  You can read their essays below.

HWI is proud to be able to make this scholarship available to these deserving graduates.  By providing this scholarship, HWI hopes that the students will remember that history is more than just reading a book and remembering dates and names.  History is about personal stories and how they affect us. We also hope that these students will remember the rich history of Waxahachie that will always be an important part of their lives.

Congratulations again to Claudia and Dylan and to all of the amazing 2020 WISD graduates!
